Short answer
The biggest gap is Extra Space Storage, whose website blocks the automated checks we use, so none of its 1,898 locations in our data could be verified. Other chains are listed only where their own location page confirms climate control. We'd rather leave a facility out than list it on a guess.
We hold chains to the same rule as everyone else: the location’s own web page must say it offers climate-controlled units. Some chains pass easily. One very large chain can’t be checked at all.
Extra Space Storage
Extra Space is the biggest absence. Its website refuses automated visits, so our script can’t read its location pages.
- 1,898Extra Space locations in our data
- 0Could be read and verified
Of those, 1,882 were skipped because the site is known to block scripts, and 16 more returned a block when we tried. Some of those locations may well offer climate control. We just can’t confirm it from their pages, so we don’t list them.
Public Storage: listed where the location confirms it
Public Storage location pages include a list of that facility’s features. We count Public Storage locations only when climate control appears in that list, not just in general marketing text elsewhere on the site.
Other chains
Most chains have readable location pages, and their results look like independents’: listed where the page says so, left out where it doesn’t.
| Chain | Checked | Listed |
|---|---|---|
| Public Storage | 1,930 | 1,347 |
| CubeSmart | 638 | 527 |
| U-Haul | 541 | 360 |
| StorQuest | 126 | 71 |
| Extra Space | 1,898 | 0 |
The gap between “checked” and “listed” for readable chains comes from locations whose page doesn’t mention climate control, mentions found only in hidden page data, or text that appears on every location’s page and so doesn’t prove anything about one facility.
Why we don’t fill the gap another way
We could copy a chain’s locations from a marketplace site, or assume every location offers what the chain’s home page advertises. We don’t, because:
- A chain’s marketing page isn’t a promise about one building.
- Some locations offer only a handful of climate-controlled units, or none.
- The point of every listing is the quoted line you can check yourself.
Independents fill much of the gap
Local and regional operators make up a large part of the site. Of the 4,496 facilities we list, 1,295 are independents, not part of a chain. In many cities they’re the main climate-controlled option.
If you work for a chain
If your location pages state climate control but block automated visits, we can’t see them. Use the listing form to get in touch, and we’ll talk about a way to verify your locations.
